Fraud

Fraud is more than just a financial threat; it’s a growing challenge that affects individuals, businesses, and communities worldwide. Knowing how to recognize, respond to, and recover from fraudulent activity is essential in today’s digital age.

This page is your guide to understanding the many faces of fraud, the warning signs to watch for, and the steps you can take to safeguard your information, assets, and reputation.

Cybersecurity Tips

Becoming a victim to cyber threats can be alarming, but there are four simple things you can do to protect you and your family from fraud and cyber attacks:

  1. Recognize and report phishing
  2. Use strong passwords
  3. Turn on multifactor authentication
  4. Update software

Below, we’ll dive a little deeper into each of these essential tips, featuring trusted resources and videos from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). Together, we can enhance our cybersecurity awareness and stay safe online all year long.

Recognize and Report Phishing

Phishing is a type of cyber attack where an attacker tries to trick individuals into providing sensitive information. This is typically done by impersonating a trustworthy source, often through emails, messages, or websites that look legitimate. Learn to recognize the signs, report, and delete phishing scams.

Use Strong Passwords

Using strong passwords is one of the easiest ways to protect your data. The best passwords are long, random, and unique to each account. Remembering each unique password can be difficult, but password managers are tools you can use to help.

Turn on Multifactor Authentication (MFA)

MFA is your second line of defense. Enabling MFA for each account or app allows you to add an extra layer of security by confirming your identity. Even if hackers manage to crack your password, they won’t be able to get past the MFA. It only takes a few extra moments, but it significantly enhances your protection.

Update Software

Many updates are designed to fix security vulnerabilities in software. You can keep your software up to date by watching for notifications, installing updates as soon as possible, or enabling automatic updates. By doing this, you’ll ensure that your software always has the latest security features and protections.

Current Spoofing Scam

One current fraud trend is for scammers making calls look like they are coming from PCM Credit Union. This is what you may notice:

  • Your caller ID shows a call that appears to be from PCM Credit Union. If you have us saved in your phone it could even say PCMCU.
  • The scammer is stating there is fraud, and in order to stop it, they need the missing information from your card or access to your online accounts.
  • If you hesitate to give any information, the scammer tries to convince you that they are from PCMCU because they are calling you from PCMCU’s legitimate phone number.

Please always remember to never give out personal or account information in reply to a random call, text or email.

  • PCMCU will never call you and ask for personal or card information.
  • PCMCU will never ask you to allow us remote access to devices in your home.
  • PCMCU will never ask you for your log in credentials for your online banking to show you refunds, overpayments, or fraud transactions.
  • PCMCU will never ask you to provide any card information in the event the call is regarding card transactions.

Spoofing can also happen via emails or texts, so always be wary! Don’t click on links or call the numbers in those emails or texts. Hang up and call us immediately if you did give out any information relating to your accounts.
